The FIFA Best Football awards for 2020 have been canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis as Lionel Messi and Megan Rapinoe will remain reigning champions in the men and women’s categories.
According to Spanish news media outlet Marca, the world football governing body states made the decision in canceling awards ceremony is owing to health concerns.
The event was supposed to hold in September, in Milan, Italy, but health conditions have been considered amid the global pandemic.
“The social and health conditions have made FIFA cancel this year’s edition of ‘The Best’. The trophy remains with no winner this year and Messi will continue to be the reigning champion.” the news media reported.
Barcelona’s Messi who won the 2019 edition beating Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo will however be the reigning best pending when the FIFA best event would hold again.
CANDIIDONLINE reports that Ronaldo still holds the most record for FIFA The Best award wins with two while the other two editions have been won by Luka Modric and Messi.
Rapinoe won the women’s category while Jurgen Klopp and United States handler Jill Ellis scooped the best men and women’s coaches respectively.
It is understood that other football awards including ‘France Football’ and Ballon d’Or as well as the UEFA Champions League group stage ceremonies will still go as planned.
The Best FIFA Football Awards is an association football award presented annually by the sport’s governing body, FIFA.
The first award ceremony was held in January 2017 in Zurich, Switzerland. The award is aimed at reviving the FIFA World Player of the Year, which was merged with France Football ‘s Ballon d’Or in 2010 to become the FIFA Ballon d’Or in a six-year partnership.
