English-born Ghanaian footballer, Derrick Otim has died at the of 24 after he drowned in a lake in the US.
The former Nottingham Forest midfielder drowned on Friday, July 3, in Lake Keowee, South Carolina, according to reports.
In 2018, Lake Keowee was branded South Carolina’s “most deadly body of water” in a local news article which said 32 people had lost their lives there within 25 years.
Otim trained with Forest Academy, before moving to America for university four years ago.
He had recently graduated from Xavier University and is claimed to have been visiting friends in South Carolina before his sudden death.
Scored two goals to go along with four assists, tied for the most assists on the team, played and started in all 17 matches, had a goal and an assist at No. 9 Kentucky (Sept. 11). Also scored against Memphis on Sept. 14, had two assists vs UNC Asheville on Oct. 29.
Made 14 appearances, all starts, and logged 1,093 minutes in the midfield… scored two goals and added two assists to tie for fifth on the team with six points… took 20 shots and put five on frame… scored first goal of season in XU’s home opener against Cincinnati Christian on Aug. 24… posted a pair of assists in Xavier’s 5-3 win over Butler to help clinch a spot in the league playoffs on Oct. 31… opened the scoring with a goal in a 2-2 draw at Marquette in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals.
Made 20 starts and ranked fifth on the team with 1,703 minutes played in the midfield… registered one assist… took 20 shots and put four on frame… first assist of the season came in Cory Brown’s first goal in the 73rd minute of a 2-2 draw against No. 15 Butler in the BIG EAST Championships semifinal round (11/8).
Appeared in all 19 matches, making 18 starts and ranking fifth on the team with eight points (3G, 2A)… scored first collegiate goal in a 3-1 win over Evansville (8/26)… scored a go-ahead goal in an eventual 1-1 draw against Dartmouth (9/5)… put the final exclamation point on a 4-2 comeback win against UC, assisting on the go-ahead goal and scoring in the 87th minute (9/9) to provide the final margin of victory… assisted on Matt Vasquenza’s equalizer in the 80th minute of an eventual 2-1 win over No. 18 Creighton (10/26).
Played for prestigious Nottingham Forest FC, making 32 appearances and scoring 15 goals for the youth team.
