Nigeria’s biggest music export, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun popuplarly known as Wizkid celebrates his 30th birthday today, 16th July and the Nigerian online community is celebrating the music star for his contributions in the music industry.
After a music haitus, Star boy commemorates this milestone with a much-anticipated music release featuring American musician H.E.R on a song dubbed “Smile”.
Currently trending at Number one on Twitter, Wizkid, who is celebrating his 30th birthday, is also reckoned as a major custodian of the Afrobeats to the World movement.
With hints of a forthcoming album tagged “Made In Lagos” on its way, the excitement from fans has risen to a peak.
Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun (born 16 July 1990), known professionally as Wizkid is a Nigerian singer and songwriter.
He began recording music at the age of 11 and managed to release a collaborative album with the Glorious Five, a group he and a couple of his church friends formed.
Wizkid signed a record deal with Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E) in 2009.
He rose to prominence after releasing “Holla at Your Boy”, the lead single from his debut studio album Superstar (2011).”Tease Me/Bad Guys”, “Don’t Dull”, “Love My Baby”, “Pakurumo” and “Oluwa Lo Ni” were also released as singles from the Superstar album.
Ayo, his self-titled second studio album, was released in September 2014. It was supported by six singles: “Jaiye Jaiye”, “On Top Your Matter”, “One Question”, “Joy”, “Bombay” and “Show You the Money”. Wizkid left E.M.E after his contract expired.
It serves as his major-label debut and was primarily a Caribbean-influenced record. SFTOS was supported by five singles: “Daddy Yo”, “Sweet Love”, “Come Closer”, “African Bad Gyal” and “Naughty Ride”.
Wizkid became the first Afrobeats artist to appear in the 2018 Guinness World Records for his contribution to “One Dance”.
Wizkid established his label imprint Starboy Entertainment in March 2013. He revealed to Yvonne Ekwere of Silverbird Television that he planned on signing new acts to the label.
In an interview with Showtime Celebrity, he said he had established his own record label to give up-and-coming artists a platform to showcase their talent.
In April 2013, Wizkid signed Maleek Berry and Legendury Beatz to his imprint. His work credits with the Berry include “Lagos to Soweto” and “The Matter”.
In May 2013, he unveiled photos of himself with the two musicians. Wizkid debuted the music video for “Caro” and announced the signing of L.A.X in August 2013.
In February 2014, Wizkid became the first Nigerian musician to have over one million followers on Twitter.
He visited The Beat 99.9 FM studio in Lagos and told Toolz he had collaborated with Barbadian singer Rihanna in July. He was also invited as a special guest for some shows on Tinie Tempah’s tour of the UK in 2014.
On 7 May 2016, Wizkid announced the signings of Efya, R2Bees, and Mr. Eazi; he made the announcement following his performance at the 17th edition of the Ghana Music Awards.
In 2016, Wizkid achieved international recognition following his collaboration with Drake on the global hit, “One Dance”, which reached number one in 15 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
He signed a multi-album deal with RCA Records in March 2017. His third studio album Sounds from the Other Side was released on 14 July 2017.
In 2018, Wizkid sign Terri into Starboy Entertainment, he made the announcement via his Twitter account.
