Victor Osimhen has officially become Nigeria’s most expensive player.
He attained this feat at age 21 after completing a big-money move from Lille to Napoli.
The Nigerian international striker scored 18 goals in 38 appearances for the French club Lille in the 2019-20 season. Consequently, he made successful moves to Naples in a five-year deal worth €50 million (£45m/$59m).
The Serie A side also confirmed the signing in a statement via its website and Twitter page.
It said, ‘SSC Napoli is delighted to announce the signing of Victor Osimhen from Lille on a permanent transfer.’
The big-money move also made Osimhen the most expensive signing in Napoli’s history. Hirving Lozano held this position at the club when he signed from PSV Eindhoven for €38m plus bonuses. But, Victor Osimhen has shattered it.
The young Nigerian star wants to wear the No.9 jersey at Napolis. So, he will get it during his presentation to the media in Naples after his summer vacation.
A delighted Osimhen wrote on Twitter: ‘Can’t wait to put on this iconic jersey, thank you for the warm welcome.’
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Amuneke, believes Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen could become better than African football icon, Didier Drogba.
Osimhen has scored 13 goals in 27 matches during his Ligue 1 debut season.
Some months ago, he was compared to Drogba by Nicolas Penneteau, his former teammate at Belgian club, Sporting Charleroi.
Osimhen just completed a mega move to Italian club Napoli. The deal made him Nigeria’s most expensive player.
When quizzed about the comparison with Drogba, Amuneke who coached the Golden Eaglets to U17 World Cup success in Chile five years ago, thinks Osimhen can surpass Chelsea legend Drogba
